The history of the house
On April 25, 1904, pharmacist Hermann Otto Erich Steuer, who later built the Villa Ilske, came to Bad Kösen with his family and took over the local pharmacy. At that time, Bad Kösen was a really chic little fashionable spa with well-kept facilities.
Elegant private brine bathhouses
Artists, scientists, poets, painters and even members of the Prussian court frequented the spa. They loved the mild climate and the emerging brine treatments. Elegant private saltwater bathhouses, such as the first bathhouse (Heun’s House) built in 1823 at Eckartsbergaer Straße 3, had a significant impact on the townscape.
Today you can taste the local wines in the cozy wine cellar in Heun’s House.
After the conversion of the bathing rooms, one of the most beautiful wine cellars in the region was created. Wine tastings are available for groups of 15 or more by arrangement with the Becker family.
Käthe Kruse
Motorboat traffic to Rudelsburg Castle began in 1900, the spa center was inaugurated in 1911 and a ferry was built so that the graduation house could also be visited a short distance away. These were certainly good reasons that attracted thousands of guests to Bad Kösen on special trains at the weekends.
Käthe Kruse lived and worked here from 1912 and created her famous dolls.
Places of interest
The charming landscape, the Saalberge mountains and the Köppelberg have contributed significantly to the beginning of the thousand-year history of wine, which is why the Pforta monastery was built in the immediate vicinity. Other historic buildings, such as the Romanesque House, Rudelsburg Castle, St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Naumburg (UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2018), the historic old town of Naumburg, Neuenburg Castle near Freyburg and the battlefield of Jena-Auerstedt in 1806, make the area around Bad Kösen a particularly charming historical attraction.
This is why the property acquired by Hermann Steuer in 1914 was his first address. In 1915, he sold his pharmacy and lived with his family in the stately villa with its magnificent large grounds in a prime location above the village.
Circular hiking trail
A narrow, romantic serpentine path, past a cozy seating area (honorary box) and on to the newly laid out vineyard by the Becker family, leads directly to Saalstraße.
This makes it possible to take a 2.5-hour circular walk with a climb up to the Saalhäuser. Finally, the Steuer couple decided to sell the property as they got older.
The Becker family takes over
Thanks to Mr. Hartmut Lampert, then director of the company academy for agricultural engineering, the entire facility, which served as accommodation for course participants until reunification, was acquired in a well-kept condition from the Becker family via the “Treuhand”. Through extensive renovation work while retaining the classic The Hotel Villa Ilske was created with the staircase design. The name is dedicated to the slope of the “Ilske” forest behind it.
The Villa Ilske team
Our family-run hotel employs two generations, Kathrin and Jürgen Becker and their son Christian. We are supported by long-standing service, kitchen and hotel staff. Our head chef Marcus has been loyal to us for several decades. Together we are a strong team.

Flair Hotels
